Reports from the oil-rich northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado say Islamist insurgents have attacked the village of Miangalewa, killing 10 people.

The independent Mozambican electronic paper, CartaMoz, says the latest deadly attack took place on Saturday after the militants attacked the same village a week ago.

CartaMoz cites different sources as saying that the latest attack against Miangalewa occurred early on Saturday morning.

But it says that unlike the previous attack, the jihadists did not shoot in the air to indicate their arrival. This paved the way for them to surprise many villagers.

This meant the militants, locally known as al-Shabab, were able to kill seven people as they arrived in the village.

Then, the attackers searched for villagers who had fled and killed three more.

According to the same sources, there was no response from the security forces.

The group has no known links to the Somali jihadist group of the same name.

The attack occurred two days after Interior Minister Amade Miquidade announced that the army had killed 50 militants in Cabo Delgado.

The militants have spent the past two years operating in the shadows, attacking remote villages across the province, ambushing army patrols on isolated roads and instilling terror in many rural communities.

The Islamic State group has said it is connected to the Mozambican militants, but it is not clear if this is the case.
